Portugal Income and Estate Guide 2026
Twenty pages on what your money does once you live in Portugal: where income comes from, what the 2025 treaty changed, and what two inheritance systems each have a claim on.
Last reviewed 23 August 2026.
Portugal's non-habitual resident regime closed to new arrivals on 1 January 2024, and IFICI, the regime often called NHR 2.0, expressly excludes pension income. Since 29 December 2025 a new UK-Portugal treaty governs which country taxes what. This guide sets out where that leaves your income, your healthcare and your estate, with the instrument and date behind every figure.
What is inside
-
The spine. Every dated decision, pre-move and post-move, on one spread, each marked still open or already closed.
-
Where your income comes from, and in which currency. Pension income, the State Pension uprating, drawdown order, and the gap between the currency you are paid in and the currency you spend in.
-
The lump sum, and the date that fixes how it is treated. UK treatment against Portuguese treatment of the same payment, and why the residence date is the fact that decides it.
-
The regime question, stated accurately. NHR closed, the transitional cohort, IFICI, and the three positions a reader can actually be in.
-
Your estate, twice. UK exposure after departure, Portuguese stamp duty and the direct-line exemption, forced heirship, and the election that has to be in the will before it is any use.
-
Protection. Cover written in one country and lived in another, and the death-in-service benefit that ended when the job did.
-
The filing calendar. NIF, the annual return window, healthcare registration and the S1, on one calendar.
-
Sources and dates checked. Every instrument named, with the date the rule was checked.
